JTI DEFENDS ITS MARKET POSITION WITH INVESTMENT IN NEW BRANDS

JT International Berhad’s Fourth Quarter Financial Results

For The Year Ended 31st December 2007

JT International Berhad (JTI) registered consolidated revenue of RM217.1 million for the fourth quarter ended 31st December 2007, representing an 11% increase compared with RM195.1 million in the corresponding quarter last year. The increase was driven by higher prices offset marginally by lower sales volume. The Group registered profit before tax of RM8.7 million for the quarter under review, compared with RM20.5 million in the corresponding quarter last year. The decrease in profit before tax was in line with JTI’s expectations as the Group continued to invest heavily behind new brand initiatives.

For the year under review, the Group improved consolidated revenue to RM864.6 million from RM807.4 million achieved in the previous year. Profit before tax was lower at RM114.1 million compared with RM123.8 million. The increase in revenue and decrease in profit before tax were attributed to the factors mentioned above. In this regard, the higher marketing expenditure was driven by significant investment in launching new premium brands. These investments have proven effective as the new Camel brand has delivered an encouraging performance in its first year of introduction.

2007 proved to be another challenging year for the industry, which experienced further decline in sales volume, albeit at a slower rate compared to the previous year. The decline was driven primarily by the increasing levels of illegal cigarettes as well as the continued growth of exceptionally low priced cigarettes, following a significant excise tax increase in July, 2007. However, despite these challenges, JTI successfully maintained its share of market, outperforming major competitors, based on AC Nielsen’s retail audit.

The Group expects market conditions to remain challenging in 2008. Sales volume is anticipated to remain under pressure due to down-trading activities by consumers towards exceptionally low priced and illegal cigarettes. Notwithstanding, JTI is committed to maintaining its competitiveness through continued effective investment behind its key brands and expects to deliver a satisfactory overall performance for the current financial year.
