MHC Plantations Bhd
Tan Lai Kim (Holdings) Sdn Bhd, an old developer in Kuala Lumpur , bought 5% of MHC early Jan 2008. This company also has businesses in oil palm cultivation and palm kernel crushing, which makes it a good fit for MHC.
It owns about 8,393.3 acres of plantation in Teluk Intan, Perak, while 32%-owned associate Cepatwawasan Group Bhd has 27,457.7 acres in Sabah . This effectively gives MHC a total land bank of some 17,185.3 acres. Based on the company's share capital of 84.2 million shares, this translates into 0.2 acre per 1,000 MHC shares.
Investors buying 1,000 MHC shares are indirectly paying only RM1,770 for 0.2 acre of plantation land compared with the current price of about RM30,000 per acre planted land with maturing trees.
In 2005, the planter borrowed to buy the 32% stake in Cepatwawasan for RM122.2mil, which reversed its net cash position to a net gearing of 0.22 times, based on net borrowings of RM37.5mil as at end-September. However, given the strong net cashflow from its operations of RM13.5mil in the third quarter 2007, MHC could be back in a net cash position soon.
Cepatwawasan contributed more than half of the group's pre-tax profit in the third quarter 2007. Operating profit in the first nine months of FY08 jumped 58% to RM8.8mil from RM5.6mil a year ago due to higher prices for fresh fruit bunches (FFB) and better contribution from its associate company. Net tangible assets per share stood at RM1.86.
Financial Results …
For third quarter ended Sept 30, 2007, MHC's earnings per share (EPS) stood at 7.98 sen. If annualised for the year ending Dec 31, 2008 (FY08), the company's EPS could go up to about 32 sen. |
