CITIGROUP Inc and Macquarie Group Ltd raised their forecasts for palm oil futures in Malaysia, the global benchmark, amid expectations that demand for the vegetable oil for cooking and alternative fuel will increase.

Citigroup raised its forecast to RM2,900 a metric ton for 2008 from RM2,500 projected earlier, it said in a report yesterday.

Macquarie, in a separate report, increased its average price forecast for this year to US$880 (US$1 = RM3.27) a ton from US$780.

Palm oil reached a record RM3,204 a ton yesterday and has averaged RM3,147 since the year started, as investors speculated higher crude oil prices will force countries to increase the use of bio-diesel made from the vegetable oil. Rising incomes are also boosting cooking oil demand in China and India, the biggest consumers.

"We remain bullish on the sector," the Citigroup report on Malaysian plantations said.

In 2008 palm oil "will follow the lead of other competing oils" such as soybean oil, it said. Soybean oil, made by crushing soybeans, is palm oil's main rival.

Higher palm oil prices will boost earnings at plantation companies including IOI Corp. and IJM Plantations Bhd, Citigroup said. It has a "buy" rating for both the companies' shares.

Citigroup raised its forecast for palm oil prices in both 2009 and 2010 to RM3,100 a ton from RM2,700. Macquarie's forecast for 2009 and 2010 was US$950 a ton, compared with a previous projection of US$780.

Global soyabean supplies remain tight and could be further exacerbated by lower planting prospects in South America as a result of adverse weather, Macquarie said.

Shortages of rapeseed oil and sunflower oil in the European Union may also add to demand for soyabean oil and palm oil, it added.

Palm oil for March delivery rose RM32, or one per cent, to RM3,193 a ton on the Malaysia Derivatives Exchange in Kuala Lumpur at 5.35pm local time yesterday.

Soyabean oil for March delivery rose 0.7 per cent to 51.35 cents a pound at 5.10pm Kuala Lumpur time in after-hours electronic trading on the Chicago Board of Trade. The commodity, reached a record 51.64 cents a pound yesterday. - Bloomberg
